Whilst running the RISE sessions at our previous venue some of our parents/carers stayed to support their child. It was soon evident that they were benefiting from the groups as much as the young people; they started to offer each other support and would sit together and chat whilst crafting along.
During Covid-19 our staff and volunteers have kept regular phone contact with our parents/carers but identified a need for some peer support during this uncertain time.
We started running separate virtual parent/carer sessions and set up a WhatsApp group to enable the parents to catch up, learn from each other and offer mutual support like only they can.
Rachel has recently said that she cannot wait to be able to sit down with the other parents and have a good natter as she has missed the group and socialising with them, she said the virtual parents group is helping build her confidence again.
“The Parents’ Group that meets every 2 weeks has been a help too, engaging with other parents and helping each other out with any difficulties we may be facing, or just having a chat. ”
“During lockdown the team at Sam’s Place have called every week and have offered support to parents as well as providing online activitiesfor the young people. Lockdown has been tough but I have felt cared for, supported and not alone. ”
